In Pittsburgh, the best-known bakeries and bagel shops have lines on weekend mornings, so arrive early or order ahead where the shop offers it. Across Pennsylvania, immigrant bakeries add Mexican pan dulce, Vietnamese banh mi bread, Chinese buns, Middle Eastern sweets and European rye to the mix, and many gluten-free and vegan bakeries have opened in larger cities. Check the listing for hours, whether the shop accepts custom cake orders and its Google rating before you go, and call about allergens, since small kitchens often share equipment. Day-old bread and end-of-day discounts are common if you ask.

Pittsburgh is in Pennsylvania, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Traffic in Pittsburgh peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

My wife and kids (9 & 5) and I came here somewhat late in our five day vacation . Everyone was kind of worn out, fussy, and tending toward skepticism... but on first glance of what was on offer at La Gourmandine the attitudes gave way to enthusiasm. And a very choosy wife, and two very choosy kids, all got something they really enjoyed. We walked over from the Airbnb we rented for our vacation that was in Lower Lawrenceville. The weather was pretty good, and walking with the kids, it wasn't too far. The crowd was good, but we ate at one of the tables outside. It was comfortable. Nice way to spend a morning.

An amazing French bakery with some of the best pastries in the city. The space is small but very well organized. The environment is busy but pleasant. Everything feels fresh and high quality. Their croissants, eclairs, and pastries are standout items! Prices are fair for the quality. Overall, it’s a must-visit spot for anything sweet or baked and absolutely worth stopping in.

The first time I went there was about a year ago visiting family in the state. The absolute joy I felt walking in still brings a smile to my face. The bakers that worked there were absolutely lovely and the owner was so incredibly kind! They had smiles on their faces the entire time and answered all of my questions about the baked goods! They made my family and I feel welcomed and we still talk about our first experience! Most recently visiting the bakery as we go back to the state, the quality and atmosphere remain outstanding! The bakers are friendly, the atmosphere attracts kind people, and the pastries are absolutely divine! My go to is and will continue to be a chocolate croissant with almonds and chouquettes! If you are in the area you absolutely should give it a try!

The food here was absolutely delicious. It was as good as I had heard. Unfortunately the food was the only good part of the experience. It was the most important part which is why this is a two-star review and not a one-star. La Gourmandine was very busy. There was a line which is not really a problem. I tried to get in the line but a gentleman in the building before me was not in the line. I asked him if he was waiting and he said yes so I got in the line but tried to leave space for him. He never did get in the line so when his turn came the staff did not see him and asked me to order. I let them know that he was before me. The staff member rolled their eyes at me and huffily took the man's order. After that, the same staff member skipped me in line and started taking the order of the person in line after me. I tried to speak up for myself and the staff member yelled and told the person they were talking to that they had already started taking his order. That man was frazzled and so was I. The staff member was not polite in any way and you could tell everyone involved was uncomfortable. Next the staff member snarked at me that if I was finally ready they could take my order.

This is such a cute and delicious bakery! I went with a friend and liked it so much that I went back and snagged some pastries for my kids and husband an airplane ride away. I put them in a bag, and my daughter wanted more the second she finished her croissant. There isn't really a place to sit in the bakery, but the street it's on has plenty of tables and chairs. 10/10
